Nike: End Sponsorship of Homophobic Boxer Manny Pacquiao Campaign
I saw this when our very own, Fashion Blogger turned real fashionista Bryanboy posted on his status on Facebook. It’s about a campaign to stop Manny Pacquiao endorsing Nike for citing a bible excerpts that states something against gay people. Well, Bryanboy is a Filipino and gay. And my initial reaction — well, he’s gay first before becoming a Filipino.
An anti-Manny Pacquiao-Nike sponsorship online petition was launched on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, right after his comments on gay marriage during an earlier interview by Examiner’s Granville Ampong called the attention of the LGBT community.
“If a man lies with a man as one lies with awoman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” A statement reads on the said petition page, which was created by GayMarriageUSA of New York, with Pacquiao allegedly quoting the Leviticus 20:13 Bible verse.
“It is completely unacceptable that such a high-profile company should be sponsoring a boxer who is encouraging violence towards LGBT people.”GayMarriageUSA added, and inviting the public to sign on their petition calling on Nike to end their sponsorship to Pacquiao.
Meanwhile, a post at Manny Pacquiao‘s official website said that the eight-division boxing champion is only quoting the verses from the Bible, noting that “it is evident that more study on the words and teachings of Christ are required”.
